Granny Smith Apples
Washington Granny Smith Apple

Granny Smith is another apple variety. It originated in Australia by Maria Smith, where the name "Granny Smith" comes from. It was introduced to the United States 1972.

Granny Smith apples are a light speckled green in color, though some may have a pink blush, which is one of the factors in differentiating the Granny Smith Washington Extra Fancy Premium Apples to Granny Smith Washington Extra Fancy Number 1 Apples. Most other apple growers in different regions of the world grade their Granny Smith apples according to same criteria. Granny Smith is tart, crisp and very juicy. Granny Smith apples are excellent for both cooking and eating of the hand. Granny Smith Apples are also used for salads preparation; because the slices do not brown as quickly as other apples varieties. A Granny Smith Apple usually has a somewhat sourer, sharp flavor than other apples varieties. Granny Smith also has a tendency, to have a harder texture than other green apples.

Granny Smith needs fewer winter chilliness hours and a longer growing season to mature the fruit, so it is favored for the milder areas of the apple growing regions, such as Northern California.

Grannies are harvested in October and can be purchased October to August.
